John Deere has expanded its 8R/RX line-up with three new high-horsepower tractors—the 440, 490 and 540—built for heavy draft work, long days and large-scale farming.
Powered by the JD14 13.6L engine and available with eAutoPowr™ transmission as standard, the range is designed to deliver strong pulling performance, high efficiency and advanced Precision Ag capability. The 540 is described as the world’s most powerful standard-design tractor, with up to 634 hp available through Peak Power Intelligent Power Management (PP IPM).
Built to pull: traction choices for heavy draft and soil care
Customers can specify the new 8R models with tyres up to 2.30 m at the rear and 1.85 m at the front, with single or dual wheel configurations. A single-line Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS) is available to automatically adjust tyre pressures, supporting performance in the field and efficiency on the road.
For those wanting track performance, the 8RX HHP models feature an updated four-track system with redesigned undercarriages and Soucy CustomFit™ P series belts, designed with a low-tension approach to help reduce belt stress and extend operating life. Depending on configuration, the track setup offers up to 4.87 m² contact area and ground pressures as low as 0.4 kg/cm², helping to minimise compaction.
Efficiency and control: eAutoPowr™ plus smarter power boost
The new HHP line-up features eAutoPowr™ as standard, using an electro-mechanical split-path layout that replaces hydrostatic components with electric motor generators—improving energy flow efficiency by up to 8% compared with conventional hydrostatic solutions (John Deere comparison). PP IPM adds an additional 40 hp across the main engine speed range down to 1,600 rpm, supplying extra power for demanding applications including high-load PTO and hydraulically or electrically driven implements.
Comfort and visibility: CommandView™ 4 cab updates
Operator experience is enhanced with the latest CommandView™ 4 cab upgrades, including a redesigned CommandARM™ with integrated Convenience Display and new joystick options (CommandX Plus or CommandX Pro) for tailored control and expanded Precision Ag functionality. Additional refinements include inductive phone charging, enhanced wiper coverage, push-button start with PIN protection, and soft-close door cinch. John Deere also highlights increased space and visibility—15% more legroom and a 20% wider panoramic field of view compared with the 8R standard series cab.
Precision Ag ready, connected from the factory
All new 8R and 8RX models come equipped with a StarFire™ 7500 receiver, G5Plus CommandCenter™ display, and JDLink™ connectivity as standard. With flexible license options, operators can access supervised autonomy features to support consistent work quality and reduce operational mistakes—such as AutoPath™ Rows & Boundaries, AutoTrac™ Turn Automation, Passive Implement Guidance, and Implement Guidance in Reverse.
Road performance and field-to-field practicality
For transport, the tractors offer high-speed capability (market dependent), with John Deere outlining features such as ILS Roll Control to reduce lean in corners and minimise forward dip under braking, plus Reactive Command Steering for more car-like handling and easier line-holding.
